The officers of the National Anti-corruption Centre (NAC) and the prosecutors of the municipality of Chisinau have announced the detention of a man from Cahul in a criminal case of influence peddling. He is suspected of having received 32 000 euros from a person to influence the decision in a criminal case.
According to the accumulated materials, the suspect allegedly promised that he has influence over some public figures within the law enforcement institutions in whose management there was a criminal case based on the fact of committing the crime of influence peddling, instigation and complicity in committing forgery and making, possessing or using false official documents, and that he could determine them to apply a non-custodial sentence to the accused in the form of a fine. For mediation, but also for the so-called bribery of law enforcement officers, the suspect allegedly demanded and received 32 000 euros.
Based on the information reported, the NAC initiated a criminal case under art. 326 of the Criminal Code – influence peddling. This morning, under the procedural leadership of the prosecutors of the Chisinau Municipal Prosecutor's Office, searches were carried out at the suspect's home, work office and two cars. Following the criminal investigation, the man was detained for 72 hours.
Investigations into the case continue in order to establish all the circumstances. We remind that every person shall be presumed innocent until a final and irrevocable court decision is issued.
