The management of a rehabilitation institution for the elderly and disabled and an intermediary, detained by the NAC in several corruption cases

The director and deputy director of a rehabilitation centre for the elderly and disabled in the city of Vadul lui Vodă, as well as an intermediary, were detained by the National Anti-corruption Centre (NAC) and the prosecutors of the municipality of Chișinău following over 50 searches carried out throughout the country. The individuals are being investigated in several cases of passive corruption, influence peddling and embezzlement of foreign assets using their official position in the public procurement process.

According to preliminary data, the director and deputy directors of the institution, subordinated to the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection and financed from the state budget, allegedly implemented a criminal scheme to systematically claim financial means that are not due to them with amounts ranging from 10,000 lei to 40,000 lei - money intended for fraud in public tenders for the purchase of various goods and services for the benefit of the sanatorium.

Also, the NAC officers documented the acts committed by the management of the sanatorium, manifested by the failure to collect in the institution's accounting the financial means, collected from individuals for balneo-sanatorial recovery treatment - money that was subsequently distributed and used for private purposes, including the actions of decision-makers that led to the embezzlement of the institution's assets.

We specify that the criminal investigation actions also target 12 economic agents, investigated in the aforementioned files. Currently, three people - the director, the deputy director of the sanatorium and an intermediary - are detained for 72 hours and are in the custody of the NAC, and all criminal proceedings are taking place under the leadership of the Chisinau Municipal Prosecutor's Office.

UPDATE

The equivalent of over 1.5 million lei was seized following today's searches by NAC officers in corruption cases targeting representatives of a spa and health resort and economic agents.

The funds, in different currencies, were found at the individuals' homes, and about 900 000 lei of the total amount was seized from the sanatorium's decision-makers. The origin of the money is to be established during the investigation.
