The sequestrations, estimated at about 17 million lei, were applied by the Criminal Assets Recovery Agency under the NAC in a number of cases of illicit enrichment. The information was presented in the CARA report that refers to the cases initiated against some officials, suspected or charged for illicit enrichment. Among the participants of the cases are officials, including prosecutors, judges, police officers, customs officers, mayors and fiscal inspectors. Also, the delegations were sent in the CARA’s address regarding a former member of the Government, as well as a NAC officer.

According to the CARA note, the agency received for execution 20 delegations regarding the suspects and the authorizing officers of the delegations mentioned above are the criminal investigation body of the National Anticorruption Center, the Anticorruption Prosecution Office, Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases and Prosecutor General’s Office. The CARA froze 10 immovable properties, two luxurious cars, Mercedes and Skoda, a construction land, a bank account, as well as other types of assets.

The information presented in the report contains the data referring exclusively to the cases of illicit enrichment for 3 years, the period of 2019-2021.

Currently, the Agency is conducting parallel financial investigations within 10 delegations regarding the ten former officials and persons connected to them.

The CARA is pointing out that the process of criminal assets recovery will be completed with the adoption by the court of the confiscation decision. The final step of the process of the recovery or selling seized assets is carried out by the bailiff and the Fiscal State Service.
